Installation and Configuration of Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop 7.8 AppDisks and AppDNA for a Basic Proof of Concept

I am really excited to see Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.8 has released to web! With this release, there are too many exciting new features to detail out here, instead just take a look at my buddy Thomas Poppelgaard's detailed list here. I've summarized some of the components I'm most excited about below… What's New in 7.8 (More details…): AppDisks has finally shipped!  Woohoo!! Full integration in Studio for AppDNA and AppDisks.  More details… Enhanced support for Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V)! Now there is no longer a dependency on the management and publishing servers in studio. Simply point Studio to [...]

Free MDT Tools and PowerShell Scripts to Fully Automate the Deployment and Configuration of Hyper-V Server 2016, Failover Clustering, and Storage Spaces Direct for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure!

In the previous blog post I demonstrated how to build a proof of concept environment using Windows Server 2016 with Hyper-V and Storage Spaces Direct using virtual machines on VMware vSphere. Expanding on the concepts that I covered in the previous post, I'm going to show you how to fully automate the installation and configuration process using Microsoft's free hypervisor and deployment software, namely Hyper-V Server 2016 and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2013 Update 1. If you follow the steps in this post, at the end you will have a fully automated, entirely free Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform including shared storage [...]

Introduction and Evaluation of Windows Server 2016 TP4 Hyper-V using Storage Spaces Direct for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure

This is a two part series. To read the second post, click here. A couple years ago Microsoft released a new feature in Windows Server called Storage Spaces. From the customers that I work with, the feature has not been widely adopted, but has attracted much interest from Microsoft shops, particularly those looking to leverage for Hyper-V SMB storage or for scale-out private clouds. I suspect this is mostly due to one of the original limitations of Storage Spaces, requiring all hosts in the cluster to see the local storage, either directly or through JBOD SAS expanders, which are not [...]

Installing and Configuring Atlantis USX 2.2 for VMware vSphere and NOW Citrix XenServer!

Introduction and Overview Several months ago, I wrote a getting started guide for Installing and Configuring Atlantis USX 2.0 on VMware vSphere. Since that time, two additional releases have become available and new to USX 2.2 is the ability to manage, present, and consume storage from Citrix XenServer! Read more about the USX on XenServer announcement here. At Atlantis Connect in early February, my friend and fellow Citrix Technology Professional, Thomas Poppelgaard did a session with Mark Nijmeijer where Atlantis USX 2.2 was installed and configured on Citrix XenServer live (in beta at the time). To learn more about Atlantis Software Defined Storage and USX, visit www.atlantiscomputing.com. USX 2.2 officially released [...]

Citrix WorkspacePod, an HP Moonshot Architect’s Perspective

TLDR: Citrix WorkspacePod summarized in one word: Bundling. For about the last year and a half, I have been affectionately called Mr. Moonshot among my peers and colleagues.  Thanks everyone, you're too kind! Naturally, at Citrix Summit when one of the big keynote announcements on WorkspacePod surfaced, I started getting a lot of questions. I'm no expert on DataON, so I can't comment on that particular piece. For all I knew, DataON was a commodity/whitebox storage company, and have never even really looked into their Cluster-in-a-Box (CiB) product family. Who knew! Enough about DataON, that's not the focus of this [...]

Getting Started with Atlantis USX! Basic Installation and Configuration Guide for the 2.0 GA Release

About two months ago I joined Atlantis Computing based out of Mountain View, California as a Sr. Solutions Architect. After recent partner trainings, customer demos, POCs, and implementations, I felt the need to share a couple USX deployment scenarios and installation procedures to broaden understanding of USX in the community. USX 2.0 is now generally available and available to download to customers and key partners. If you want to know how to get access to USX, please feel free to reach out! My colleague and VMware VCDX Hugo Phan has a ton of excellent USX resources that you can find [...]

Rapid Provisioning Bulk Virtual Machines using SCVMM and Hyper-V; Creating Full Clones for XenDesktop or Microsoft VDI

Over the last several years I've written a number of PowerShell scripts, ranging in complexity from one-liners to very complex multi-function modular packages for distribution (See the Citrix Chained Reboot Scripts for XenApp and XenDesktop for an example of one of my more complex scripts).  As I've discovered, scripting in PowerShell is an adaptive process, easily allowing you to take bits and pieces from a previous script to feed into the next. Well, that's just what I've done with this SCVMM/Hyper-V script to create Full VM Clones for Citrix XenDesktop or Microsoft VDI. See below for a demo of the [...]

Rapid Provisioning Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V hosts using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) – Part 1

Don't miss the YouTube video with the results at the bottom! Over the last several years, I've been deploying a LOT of Hyper-V. As a long-time VMware fan, I have to admit, System Center and Hyper-V are sorely lacking in my opinion when it comes to Host Profiles. After all, VMware makes it so easy to deploy with a common set of standard configurations. You drop the installer in, answer a couple easy questions, and within 15 minutes, you typically have a host that has the basic configuration. Then, you can simply attach it to your existing VMware vCenter server, [...]

Scale-Out File Server Role and Citrix Provisioning Services vDisk Stores: My Thoughts and Recommendations

Updated: The focus and root cause in this blog post has changed since I initially wrote it.  There are tons of good nuggets in the first section, so I decided to leave them so readers could follow my troubleshooting logic... Over the last couple months I've been playing and working extensively with Windows Server 2012 R2. Citrix's release of XenDesktop 7.1 and PVS 7.1 added full support for Windows Server 2012 R2, so I figured it was time to re-evaluate my current standards and deployment preferences around XenDesktop, Provisioning Services, etc. In my current setup, I'm using a CIFS Store [...]

Deploying Generation 2 (Gen2) Virtual Machines from SCVMM 2012 R2 Templates Fails with Error (23352)

Trying to deploy Generation 2 (Gen2) Windows Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machines from System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) templates over the weekend, I found consistent failures with Error (23352): Error (23352) VMM cannot find the device or this device is not valid for a boot device. Recommended Action Make sure you specify a valid device as a boot device. On the Details tab, the deployment task fails at "Change properties of virtual machine." Digging a bit on the web, I found these symptoms matched the following TechNet forum thread: Cannot create VM from Gen2 template The resolution to the [...]
