Installation and Configuration of VMware Horizon 7 for NVIDIA GRID and Blast Extreme!

Yesterday VMware released to web Horizon 7, which will likely be the most significant product launch for their End User Computing portfolio this year. Along with Horizon 7 come a number of very exciting new features that have been outlined in great detail in the following blogs: What's New With VMware Horizon 7 Introducing True SSO (Single Sign-On) in VMware Horizon 7 Network Ports Diagram Updated for Horizon 7 Taking a Closer Look at Horizon 7: Desktop & App Virtualization Reimagined VMware Horizon Blast Extreme Acceleration with NVIDIA GRID VMware Instant Clone Technology for Just-In-Time Desktop Delivery in Horizon 7 [...]

NVIDIA GRID Days 2016 Recap, Key Takeaways, Technical Deep Dive and Lessons Learned!

Last week in Santa Clara, I was honored by NVIDIA to be one of thirteen professionals to join NVIDIA enterprise graphics teams for the first ever GRID Days event! GRID Days was a fun packed two day event networking with industry professionals, and getting an inside look into the NVIDIA enterprise graphics teams, namely GRID, Quadro, and Tesla. During this event we had exclusive access to the testing and development teams, product management and marketing, executive sponsors, along with management and support teams. Wow! Much of the roadmap and content required that all professionals sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), so [...]

Citrix WorkspacePod, an HP Moonshot Architect’s Perspective

TLDR: Citrix WorkspacePod summarized in one word: Bundling. For about the last year and a half, I have been affectionately called Mr. Moonshot among my peers and colleagues.  Thanks everyone, you're too kind! Naturally, at Citrix Summit when one of the big keynote announcements on WorkspacePod surfaced, I started getting a lot of questions. I'm no expert on DataON, so I can't comment on that particular piece. For all I knew, DataON was a commodity/whitebox storage company, and have never even really looked into their Cluster-in-a-Box (CiB) product family. Who knew! Enough about DataON, that's not the focus of this [...]

Creating a Load Balanced Multi-Node Citrix StoreFront 2.0 Server Group with NetScaler Gateway 10.1!

Over a year ago I wrote a blog post covering the recently released Citrix Receiver StoreFront 1.0 at the time, which can be found here. Much has changed in the world of Citrix technologies in a year and a half, and I felt it was time to provide an update for the new Citrix StoreFront 2.0 which among other major enhancements has removed the Microsoft SQL database requirement!! Horray! Here’s the updated architectural overview that I will be covering in this blog post: Additionally, you’ll notice updated vernacular relating to the Access Gateway component as CAG VPX (v5.0.x) can be [...]

Mobile Gov 2013 Presentation – Establishing a Mobility Strategy Based on Use-Case Scenarios

I was recently asked to present an session on “Establishing a Mobility Strategy Based on Use-Case Scenarios” at the Mobile Government 2013 convention, sponsored by Public Sector Partners (www.pspinfo.com/mobilegov2013). Below is the description of the session, followed by the YouTube upload and images from the slide deck. Speaker Dane Young (@youngtech), Solutions Architect, Entisys Solutions (www.entisys.com) With the influx of mobility in the workplace, organizations are asking important questions around usage scenarios. What makes the most sense from a usability perspective? Do users need a full Windows virtual desktop from the mobile access solution? Do users need core applications from [...]

Citrix Receiver for HTML5 1.0 Installation, First Impression, and Live Demo Video

There has been a lot of hype at recent Synergy conferences regarding the new Citrix Receiver for HTML5 component, which in some cases may eliminate the need for a full Citrix Receiver client.  In this post, I’m going to do a brief review of the initial setup of Receiver for HTML5 1.0 (Released Friday), which integrates with Citrix Receiver Storefront, previously covered here. Receiver for HTML5 has a simple executable that is installed on the Storefront server(s).  The installer can be found at citrix.com under Downloads -> Citrix Receiver -> Receivers by Platform -> Receiver for HTML5 1.0 NEW! After [...]

Creating a Load Balanced Multi-Node Citrix Receiver StoreFront Server Group for use with Citrix CloudGateway

Hopefully, you are well aware that Citrix Web Interface is no longer being developed past the current version, 5.4. Stephane Thirion and Thomas Koetzing have covered product development and some background information well in their excellent blog posts you can find here: Instead of rehashing all the background details, I wanted to go through an advanced multiple server Receiver Storefront deployment with NetScaler being used for load balancing.  Then, I’ll cover the critical components required to connect through Access Gateway Enterprise Edition (on the NetScaler Platform) and Access Gateway VPX (v5.0.4). Let’s start with an architectural overview to discuss the [...]

Installing Citrix NetScaler nCore VPX 9.3 and Access Gateway Enterprise Edition in VMware Workstation for Evaluation Purposes

Several months ago I blogged about installing Access Gateway VPX Express in VMware Workstation. I recently realized that while this post has received numerous hits and comments, a more valuable blog post would focus on installing NetScaler nCore VPX and Access Gateway Enterprise Edition in VMware Workstation! VMware Workstation, or any lab environment for that matter, is the best place for an individual learning or evaluating NetScalers as it is most often isolated or detached from the corporate environment.  The approach will be similar to my post on CAG VPX Express, but in the end we will be ready to [...]

Enhanced Access Gateway Enterprise Edition 9.x White Theme for Cleaner Integration with Web Interface 5.4 Design

Citrix Web Interface 5.4 was released in correlation with XenDesktop 5 back in December of 2010. This new release featured a newly redesigned white theme promoting Citrix’s any device campaign. With the switch from white (nFuse) to black (Carbon Fiber) and now back to white (5.4), there can be inconsistencies when used in conjunction with gateway products such as Access Gateway Standard/VPX or Access Gateway Enterprise Edition on Netscaler. This issue is perpetuated if you install as default, utilizing the black carbon fiber Access Gateway Enterprise Edition front-end (default theme on current Netscaler 9.x code) to pass authentication to a [...]

Internet Explorer 9 and Citrix Web Interface ICA Launch Failures

I ran into an interesting situation today with IE9 and WI that I felt I should share.  For those that have already read CTX129082, this goes along with that article. Troubleshooting this issue for a client, I followed the recommendations in the article including Disabling ActiveX filtering globally (or for individual site), adding the site to the Trusted Sites zone with Low security zones, and renaming the application/x-ica mime type in the registry.  Despite these changes, I was still finding the launch.ica file was being blocked: I was able to reproduce this issue in my lab and the issue has to [...]
